What about ticks? Effective methods for repelling arachnids for dogs, cats and people

From spring to autumn, we often wonder what to use on ticks so as not to bring home a stowaway. When going for a walk in the park or forest, let’s protect ourselves and children against tick bites, but also our four-legged friends.

What about ticks for dogs? It is worth thinking about what will work for our pet

When wondering what to use for dogs, it is worth considering your choice carefully to perfectly match the product to the needs of our pet. The preparations come in various forms: tablets, drops, sprays or collars. They differ from each other not only in the method of application, but also in the duration of action and the active substances used. Before we reach for a specific measure, we should consider whether such a solution will work for our ward. What matters here is the age and health of the pooch, his attitude to prophylactic treatments, the type of fur of the quadruped or his preference for bathing. It is also good that the antiparasitic agent we choose works both on and on fleas and lice, which will allow us to avoid additional inconvenience for the pet. The best protection will be provided by those specifics that use a biocidal active substance, but they are not recommended for puppies, dogs with allergies, the elderly or those with health problems. Then we can choose products with natural essential oils that have a preventive and repellent effect.

What about ticks for dogs? The most effective preparations

What is the most effective for dogs? Preparations with a biocidal effect, in which the active substance was used, are characterized by high efficiency acaricides. One of the most powerful substances used in dogs is permethrinit also provides optimal protection fipronil and flumethrin. It may also be effective fluralaner tablet. They work a bit differently specifics with dimethicone – this substance creates a sticky coating on the animal’s skin that prevents arachnids from moving, but it does not have biocidal properties. It is worth paying attention to the duration of action of individual agents, which depends not only on the active substance, but also on the form of application. Anti-tick collars based on essential oils repel parasites for 2 to 4 months, permethrin collars provide protection for about 3 months, amitraz collars protect for 4 months, and flumethrin collars provide protection for up to 6 to 8 months.

What about the tick when it attacked?

What to use if, however, we failed to protect the pet from being bitten? It will be crucial in this situation get rid of the arachnid embedded in the skin as soon as possible. To remove it is worth using tweezers or a special device (can be purchased at any pharmacy). Wash your hands thoroughly before handling. Grasp the arachnid as close to the skin as possible and slowly but surely pull it out of the skin. The wound after the bite should be disinfected. However, since finding a tick on a dog’s skin can be quite difficult, it is definitely better to prevent bites with the help of properly selected preparations.

What about cat ticks? The choice is considerable

What will be effective for the cat? As in the case of dog protection, biocidal preparations are the most effective in the fight against them. Therefore, products with fipronil and flumethrin will be safe and effective in the case of cats, but products with permethrin must not be used in cats. If for some reason we cannot reach for biocides, it may be effective preparation with dimethicone, preventing ticks from moving around the cat’s body. However, it should be remembered that contact of the animal with water will reduce the effectiveness of the preparation. However, they are intimidating repellents containing natural essential oils. As a rule, the longest protection is given to cats anti-tick collars – however, make sure that they are equipped with a system that protects the cat from accidentally snagging on the obstacle. Drops and sprays are usually applied to cats every 4 weeks, and if they do not have waterproof properties – after each contact of the pet with water. It is recommended for chronically ill animals, kittens, allergy sufferers and senior cats agents with dimethicone or essential oils.

What about ticks for a child? Much depends on age

What can be used for a child? In the case of infants, it is not possible to use a safe and effective repellent, the only method of protecting the baby is using mosquito nets and avoiding places where it is easy to catch . It can be used in children over the age of one repellents containing IR3535 (this substance does not cause allergies and irritations, but it can damage plastics). Children from 2 to 12 years old can be secured repellents containing icaridin (does not negatively affect the nervous system, does not cause irritation or allergic reactions, and does not destroy synthetic materials). In exceptional cases, you can reach for DEET formulation in the lowest concentration, however, the manufacturer’s recommendations should be strictly followed and extreme caution should be exercised. This substance can have a negative effect on the nervous system, cause local skin irritation and damage plastics. So it is better to use it in children over 12 years of age and only when necessary. From the age of 3, you can also reach for repellents with essential oils.
