More than two years ago, thousands of savers of the then Cooperativa de Ahorro y Crédito del Perú Prestaperú They went through the same situation that the members of the Credicoop Arequipa cooperative go through today. Yesterday, this was intervened by the Superintendency of Banking, Insurance and AFP (SBS) and declared its bankruptcy under the cause of total loss of the capital stock and the cooperative reserve.
In August 2019, Prestaperú was dissolved by the SBS when it was incurred in the cause of total loss of the capital stock and the cooperative reserve, the same one attributed to Credicoop.
What happened to the thousands of savers who were harmed by the liquidation of Prestaperú? Henry Hurtado, former provincial governor and president of the Prestaperú savers in ArequipaHe told La República that on the legal side, the investigation that is in the hands of the Public Ministry is practically paralyzed. “The complaint that the SBS presented to the Public Prosecutor’s Office has been filed. No investigation has been initiated. (…) The complaints we made as the Prestaperú Savings Association as well, ”he lamented.
For the savers it is worrying that in more than two years nothing has been done, much less the directors, or the former chairman of the board, René Manrique Cusiramos, were intervened.
Hurtado said that the association continues to push the process so that a due investigation is carried out and those responsible are punished.
On the administrative side, the leader explained that the SBS has already concluded the administrative actions and now what corresponds is that the Judicial branch appoints a controller, which will be the entity that will have to value the assets acquired by the cooperative, track the money and accounts. This in order to determine how much money could be recovered and initiate the return to those affected.
The controlling entity will be appointed by means of a tender. In addition, it must be determined where the funds will be drawn to pay for your work. Hurtado estimates that this entire process will take up to five years.
He recalled that so far the only thing that savers have received is 1,400 soles each, which came from a solidarity fund between cooperatives.
The leader mentioned that, Of the 8,000 savers affected, more than 300 have already died. The rest continue to fight because one day they can recover part of the savings that they entrusted to PrestaPerú. It is estimated that, in total, Prestaperú handled 400 million soles from savings.
