Great Wholesale Market: more than 3,000 tons of food were not sold due to protest

In the early hours of this Friday, July 14, 2023, no agri-food products entered the Great Wholesale Market of Lima (GMML). This occurred due to the 48-hour strike that the merchants of this establishment have been following since midnight, reported the Ministry of Agrarian Development and Irrigation (midagri).

The institution also warned that from noon yesterday Thursday until midnight, 3,051 tons of food products entered the GMML, which are highly perishable.

These products could not be marketed, since all the sales pavilions have not served the public. In addition, retailers were not able to enter this compound either”the ministry said in a press release.

Among the products that entered the GMML are potatoes (1,375 tons), lemon (312 tons), onion (279 tons), sweet potato (182 tons), fresh chili (135 tons), among others.

Today they did not enter carrots, fresh peppers, green beans, cauliflower beans, cabbage, aromatic herbs, mainly.

The Midagri reports found in the My Caserita applicationwith information from 29 retail markets in 27 districts of Metropolitan Lima and Callao, indicate that, despite the stoppage in the GMML market, the supply of agri-food products in these markets is above normal, since many of them were supplied previously, in anticipation of the events of this Friday.

The ministry also highlighted that retailers turn to other markets that trade wholesale, but on a smaller scale compared to the GMML, such as the old La Parada (La Victoria) market, Tierra Prometida (La Victoria), Unicachi Sur ( Villa el Salvador), Unicachi Norte (San Martín de Porres), Huamantanga Norte (Puente Piedra) and Mercado El Valle (Carabayllo).
