Denomination of origin Cacao Amazonas Peru would begin to be exported in the last quarter of this year

The year 2016, the indecopi granted the denomination of origin Cocoa Amazon Peru to dry fermented cacao beans with shell produced exclusively in the provinces of Bagua and Utcubamba, in said region. This was established because this product has particular characteristics due to the geographical area where it is planted, between 450 and 1,200 m asl, the influence of the human factor, the production techniques used and the climatic factors, which give it an aroma and flavor unique.

The more than 1,200 cocoa-growing families in this area of ​​the country would begin to sell their product abroad with this designation of origin at the end of this yearaccording to Luis Mendoza, manager of the Peruvian Association of Cocoa Producers (APPCACAO).

The agricultural representative mentions that currently, together with the Swiss Cooperation, they are working on the implementation of the Regulatory Council. This entity will be responsible for granting the authorization to use the appellation of origin to producers, companies and organizations that meet the established criteria.

According to Mendoza, those producers who obtain the authorization will only be able to sell cocoa from the provinces of Bagua and Ucutbamba, from districts such as La Peca and Cajaruro, among others.

In addition, the cocoa must be of the fine aroma variety and demonstrate its quality and genetic diversity in the international arena.

Once the cocoa has been verified by the Regulatory Council, APPCACAO will focus on finding customers. In this sense, he highlighted that meetings have been held with potential buyers from France, Germany and Italy, who have shown great interest in acquiring the first batches once the companies and producers have authorization for use.

“We have the expectation that in this last quarter of the year we are selling the first batches with denomination of origin Cocoa Amazonas Peru“, he commented to The Republic.
