Increase in the minimum wage: does the Ministry of Labor consider a new readjustment?

He National Labor Council It will be installed again next Thursday, July 13, 2023, after a suspension that lasted since July of last year. This interruption was due to the decision of the employers to withdraw from the dialogue space in disagreement with the Executive, specifically due to the publication of DSN° 014-2022-TR, which introduces modifications to the Regulations of the Collective Labor Relations Law.

Among the main issues to be discussed in the Council is the increase in the Minimum Vital Wage (RMV) that is promoted by labor unions, such as the General Confederation of Workers of Peru (CGTP) and the Unitary Confederation of Workers of Peru (CUT).

Last month, the head of the Ministry of Labor and Employment Promotion (MTPE), Fernando Varela, stated that his portfolio does not deny the possibility of raising the RMV, but always under “technical criteria.”

“What we are looking for is that, for the first time, the increase in the minimum wage is technical, that is, that it is discussed in a supreme decree about when is the opportunity and what are the economic factors. What has happened for a long time is that, arbitrarily, it has been increased. We are not denying the possibility of an increase, but the previous step is to make that decision technical,” he said.

It should be noted that, in the last two years, after the COVID-19 pandemic, the Peruvian economy has faced a scenario of high inflation. The price variation has been higher in basic goods and services, such as food and energy. This has had a significant impact on the purchasing power of workers with lower incomes.
