Credicoop Arequipa denies bankruptcy and accuses the SBS of abuse after intervention

Representatives of Credicoop Arequipa they pronounced and denied the bankruptcy of the cooperative, this after the intervention, this Tuesday, November 30, of the Superintendency of Banking and Insurance (SBS) and the suspension of operations of the 96 agencies they have nationwide.

What the superintendency has done is an abuse against us, because we have been complying with all the requirements of the superintendency; however, today he comes and they shut me down arrogantly, “said the president of the Administrative Council of the cooperative, Rosadry Zapana.

At a press conference, it was explained that Credicoop, like other cooperatives in the country, was in an adaptation plan in compliance with the SBS regulations, for which they would have six years, a term that expired in 2026.

The superintendency began to audit the financial company in July 2019. Zapana assured that since then they have complied with the requirements, recommendations and corrected observations. After the intervention, he points out that they tried to contact the SBS, but did not get a response.

Financial situation

The Credicoop representatives denied that the cooperative has a total loss of the capital stock and the cooperative reserve, as specified in SBS Resolution No. 03904-2021.

The liquidity ratio that we are managing is above what the superintendency is asking for. We have obligations to meet our partners. But, would a bank have all the money in its hands to return all its deposits to its members? ”, Said the general coordinator of the cooperative, José Martín.

For his part, Credicoop’s auditor, César Silva, reaffirmed that the financial company would not have any liquidity problems and that this intervention by the SBS is generating a financial panic.

“The entity that should not create financial panic is creating it. The officials in charge of the SBS must have the professionalism to be able to define who is harmed in this matter, ”said Silva.

Legal actions

For Zapana, there would be third party interests behind the intervention. “This is political, it comes from above. The banks don’t want us cooperatives, ”he said.

The financial advisor, Jesús Alfaro, indicated that this Wednesday they will take legal actions against the measure of the Superintendency of Banking and Insurance.

Credicoop Arequipa has 96 financial agencies nationwide, 800 workers and more than 60,000 active members.
