SBS intervenes and suspends attention at Credicoop Arequipa headquarters nationwide

To the surprise of hundreds of clients of the Savings and Credit Cooperative-Credicoop Arequipa, the agencies nationwide were intervened this Tuesday, November 30 by the Superintendency of Banking and Insurance (SBS).

The reason is the total loss of the capital stock and the cooperative reserve, as specified in SBS Resolution No. 03904-2021. This implies the suspension of operations of the financial institution. As of June 2021, the loss amounted to more than S / 262 million.

In an SBS statement posted on the closed doors of the different Credicoop headquarters, it states that “Relevant legal actions will be taken against those who are responsible for the total loss of the capital stock and the cooperative reserve to the detriment of the partners of Credicoop Arequipa”.

This loss of capital was caused by operations prior to the state of emergency due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Most are allegedly irregular in nature to the detriment of the entity, its partners and the Coopac system.

The SBS statement also indicates that the intervention involves a series of prohibitions in order to protect assets, such as how they are to initiate judicial or administrative proceedings against the intervened cooperative for the collection of debts at their expense.

Pursue the execution of judicial decisions issued against the intervened cooperative, establish liens on any of the assets of the intervened cooperative and make payments, advances or compensation.

Likewise, assume obligations on behalf of the funds or assets that belong to them and are in the power of third parties and establish precautionary measures against assets of the entity.

The cooperative members affected may make their inquiries through the toll free 0-800-10840, from Monday to Friday from 8.30 to 6.00 pm 0-800-10840 or the chat www.sbs.gob.pe/chat/politicas.html, inquiry box: https://www.sbs.gob.pe/usuarios/consultas, Facebook page inbox: www.facebook.com/sbsperu or by online consultations: https://servicios.sbs.gob.pe/serviciosenlinea

It is worth mentioning that Credicoop Arequipa is a Tier 3 cooperative of the modular scheme, having declared that it has assets of S / 188 million. However, it was authorized to carry out operations corresponding to Level 1, because, since its constitution, it had not been subject to effective supervision.
