“It is with great pain that we inform you that on July 1, in the Mechnikov hospital in Dnieper, the heart of the writer Victoria Amelina stopped beating,” reads a statement from PEN Ukraine. The writer died in a hospital in Dnieper due to injuries she sustained during Russian shelling in Kramatorsk. Twelve people were killed when a shell hit a pizzeria in the city center. The writer came to the restaurant to meet representatives of the Colombian organization “Aquanta Ucraina” supporting her country. According to tok.fm.pl, PEN Ukraine calls the actions of Russian troops a war crime.

As we read in the biography on the Wydawnictwo Layers website, Amelina dreamed of being a writer since childhood, but she chose a slightly more reliable profession – she became a programmer and worked in corporations. Passion, however, came back to her with increased strength. In 2015, she published her first book, and then devoted herself fully to literature. She wrote about the events of Maidan, and then wrote a book for children.

Her latest publication “Dom dla Doma” is a story about the family of a Soviet colonel living in Lviv in the house of Stanisław Lem in the 1990s. The novel was nominated for the prestigious European Literary Award. In 2021, she received the Joseph Conrad Award, which is awarded by the Polish Institute in Kiev.
