What measures did the MTC announce to face the impacts of El Niño?
As we know, the El Niño phenomenon is characterized by the warming of sea waters off the coast of Peru and by global climate changes. Given the imminent danger posed by a new occurrence of this event, the Minister of Transportation, Paola Lazarte, reported that the construction of 49 bridges will be completed in the regions of Piura (18), La Libertad (11), Cajamarca (6), Ayacucho (4), Lambayeque (4), Huánuco (3), Áncash (2) and Moquegua (1), with the purpose of preventing possible rains from leaving isolated populations.
“We have identified populations that were isolated or are at risk of being isolated, which is why we will have these bridges, which have a quick impact, finished this year in coordination with Provías Decentralizado”explained the head of the MTC during her participation in the intergovernmental meeting to prepare for the El Niño Global phenomenon.
Likewise, he indicated that his sector is coordinating the execution of cleaning and clearing works on the banks of the rivers near the bridges that are located on the concessioned roads.
Finally, he said that the MTC is in a call process to buy machinery to strengthen the response to the climate emergency and highlighted the work being done in various regions of the country.
How much money will be invested for prevention actions against El Niño?
According to the information provided this morning by the President of the Council of Ministers, Alberto Otárola, the The Government has allocated a budget of S/1,446 million to promote preventive actions against the El Niño phenomenon.
In this sense, the head of the PCM explained that more than S/67 million will be invested for prevention works in Tumbes, while in Piura 95 interventions for S/182 million have been planned. Similarly, in Lambayeque, S/192 million will be allocated for 96 preventive actions in various provinces and in the Lima region, S/101 million have been allocated for 86 interventions in five provinces.
