Cybersecurity: 5 tips to protect your bank accounts and money

The increase in digital activities as a result of the new coronavirus pandemic also increased by a 52% attempted cyberattacks against financial entities during 2021. Social networks and messaging services are the most used by cybercriminals to spread malware and use of social engineering techniques, in order to illegally obtain customer data and information.

In this regard, the Banco de Comercio specialists make the following recommendations for users to carry out their transactions safely:

Avoid and protect yourself from identity theft or social media scams

Avoid interacting with social media accounts that seem suspicious to you (they usually don’t have a photo and are recently created). If it is the account of a recognized institution, certify if it is the verified page of the institution.

If you are the victim of a social media scam, the first thing to do is stay calm. Then gather the supporting evidence (screenshots, audio or video recordings, emails, etc.). He then denounces the scam to the Divindat (a specialized computer crime unit) of the PNP.

Avoid clicking malicious links

Avoid clicking links from malicious sites, they generally lack secure communication protocols (https), do not have security certificates (security locks) or try to download files without your authorization.

Therefore, always keep your electronic devices up to date and use a good antivirus in those places where you usually enter personal information or carry out financial operations.

Do not provide your personal information or bank details

Be wary of unknown third parties who try to contact you through text messages, social networks, emails, voice calls, etc., to request your personal and financial information (names, ID number, accounts, passwords, among others).

In this way, you will avoid being a victim of the demonized smishing, which consists of receiving from a bank a text message indicating that the account has been blocked and the user is asked to enter a link to enter their personal information. Do not enter the link, block the number and do not reply to the message.

Always check the letters of the web link very well and do not answer suspicious calls

Enter only URLs with “hhtps” and websites with the green security padlock. If the site you entered does not meet these conditions, please leave them immediately.

The Banco de Comercio recommends that when users search for its website, they always enter the full address in their search engine so that it can be accessed safely and directly.

On the other hand, another type of cyber attack is called Wangiri, which consists of receiving a call that is cut off when answering it, causing the victim to want to return it and thus generate money for the scammer. Don’t call back.

Promotes a culture of cybersecurity in the organization

Company leaders must promote habits such as using complex passwords on routers and mobiles, backing up data, and avoiding connection to unknown Wi-Fi networks among their workers, customers, partners and shareholders.
