Agricultural inputs would be reduced by 15% in 2024

The entry into force of the new law that strengthens water user organizations (Law No. 31801), will reduce production costs associated with agricultural inputs, says Eduardo Contreras, general manager of the National Confederation of Water Users’ Boards of Peru (Conajup).

In the opinion of the union representative, the rule that facilitates the purchase of products such as fertilizers, improved seeds and heavy machinery by user associations will allow farmers to obtain them at more affordable prices and in a timely manner.

“The mere fact that improved seed, seedlings and fertilizers can be purchased en bloc can reduce production cost by 10% and 15%”, commented to La República the general manager of conajup.

He added that the intention of the regulation is to improve the productivity of the agricultural sector, especially for those farmers who face difficulties in accessing credit and buying inputs in a timely manner.

Coping with climate change

The new regulations will also help farmers to improve their resilience against the weather phenomena or geopolitical events such as the war in Ukraine, emphasizes Contreras.

“The collective acquisition of inputs will allow better planning and a more solid decision-making capacity during the El Niño phenomenon or the dry seasons”, he mentions.

Results from next year

Although the law will take effect when your regulation before November of this year, the real effects are expected to be seen from January 2024.

Well, for its complete execution, institutions such as the National Water Authority, the National Institute of Agrarian Innovation and Senasa must issue internal resolutions to adapt to the regulations.

In this sense, contreras emphasizes that the full results will be seen in the 2024-2025 agricultural season.

It will guarantee gender parity

Law No. 31801, published on Saturday June 24, establishes a participation quota for women in the boards of directors of water user organizations.

Thus, a progressive fee is stipulated, starting with a minimum of 20% female participation in the first electoral process and gradually increasing until reaching 50% in the future.

To date, only 3 of the 127 boards that exist at the national level are chaired by women.
