While approximately 1% of insured farmers have Commercial Agricultural Insurance or Agricultural Performance Insurance, marketed by Agrobanco and microfinance entities.

Reduce the impact of the El Niño phenomenon

On the other hand, Del Carpio highlighted that during Cyclone Yaku, more than 9,000 hectares of crops were affected. To date, there are still 2,000 hectares pending compensation.

Therefore, he emphasized that during the imminent impact of the El Niño phenomenon, it is important to protect the economy of our farmers, safeguarding the investment made in planting crops, and thus provide them with peace of mind and economic stability in the face of possible adversities.

“It is essential to adopt actions to reduce the impact of the El Niño phenomenon on Peruvian agriculture. Although all of these have a different behavior, they always cause significant economic losses. For this reason, a crucial aspect implies the strengthening of early warning systems when contracting insurance”, he mentioned.

It should be noted that the impact of the El Niño phenomenon on agriculture in Peru has left devastating effects. Between 1997 and 1998, the agricultural sector suffered economic losses in the order of US$2.3 billion. Likewise, within the framework of El Niño Costero in 2017, 1.6% of GDP was lost, equivalent to US$3.1 billion. It is estimated that, during the Global El Niño of 2024, at least 0.5% of GDP will be compromised.
