The Department of Telecommunications has granted Hughes a title that allows its new Jupiter 3 satellite to operate for Ecuador, giving rural areas of the country access to broadband connectivity. The launch of this satellite will take place next week at Cape Canaveral in the United States.

The announcement was made on June 22, when State Minister Vianna Maino pointed out that during her administration she achieved greater agility for the Agency for Regulation and Control of Telecommunications in issuing authorizations or operating licenses in relation to technology and media. He said the time for these procedures has been reduced from eight months to three or four months.

What is the state of rural connectivity in Latin America?

General Manager of CALA Group – Hughes International Division, Hugo Frega, stated that the ultra-high density satellite is focused on covering the countries of the region and will enable significant increases in service performance. The new satellite joins two other geostationaries in the company’s Jupiter fleet that are 36,000 kilometers from Earth.

Hughes has more than 1.2 million subscribers in the Americas with its HughesNet services, has more than 50% market share of VSAT terminals (internet antennas) worldwide and has shipped more than 10 million terminals to customers in 100 countries, including Ecuador.

Jupiter 3’s 500 Gigabit capacity will provide Internet service to a wide range of service sectors previously unable to access connectivity, including businesses, shipping companies, airlines; it also encourages deployment of mobile backhaul and community Wi-Fi.

Jupiter 3’s capacity will double the country’s technological investment, enabling Internet access anywhere.

Minister Vianna Maino explained that in Ecuador, more than 900 million dollars have been invested in the technology sector in 2022, and during the management period, two submarine cables were inaugurated, and the third will be opened next week. The submarine cable represents an investment between 200 and 300 million dollars.

The operation of Jupiter 3 will mean doubling the capacity of the satellite service received today, as it will not only benefit rural and marginalized people, but also the manufacturing sector operating outside urban areas such as shrimp, bananas, mining, oil companies and farms.

The official noted that Jupiter will have dedicated capacity only for Ecuador, since satellites generally share their capacity between the territories of several countries.

Hugo Frega, stated that the authorization of Jupiter 3, ultrahigh generation, will affect citizens living in rural areas and will have a capacity of 500 Gigabits, which will improve the perception of users in schools that have this connection. technology to be put into service by Hughes.

He explained that this technology will allow rural schools to manage the Wi-Fi network in the community, that is, it will allow them to have high-speed connections outside of school hours.

Frega has indicated that it will enable download speeds of up to 100 megabits with a 70 to 90 centimeter antenna that facilitates installation in rural areas, and the internet will be available within hours. This opens the door to provide connectivity to rural citizens, he said.
