The Ministry of Agrarian Development and Irrigation (Midagri) implemented the Catastrophic Agricultural Insurance to reduce the vulnerability to which the crops of farmers who have few economic resources are exposed and address the damage caused by natural disasters in agriculture. In this regard, the minister of said sector, Nelly Paredes, pointed out that adjustments will be made to said insurance compared to previous campaigns.

What is Catastrophic Agricultural Insurance?

According to information from the Ministry of Agrarian Development, Catastrophic Agricultural Insurance is a Free insurance, which is 100% financed with State resources through the Guarantee Fund for the Field and Agrarian Insurance (Fogasa) and that seeks to serve small farmers with limited resources.

To guarantee its implementation, the State has allocated S/80 million in this agricultural campaign, which aims to prioritize subsistence family farming to support farm workers in their reintegration into said activity and compensate them for the damages generated by the natural disasters. In this sense, this benefit has made it possible to incorporate significant improvements, such as the increase in compensation of S/800 per hectare and the inclusion of permanent crops in the coverage.

Since when has the Agricultural Insurance been implemented?

The validity of the policy for the 2022-2023 agricultural campaign began on August 1, 2022 and ends on August 1. This insurance covers unforeseen events that cannot be controlled, therefore it provides coverage beyond the amount allocated to the payment of premiums.

How to access Catastrophic Agricultural Insurance?

According to Midagri, once a disaster occurs, the agricultural producer must notify the local agricultural office, either by going to that place or by making a phone call. In this sense, the Regional Directorate of Agriculture (DRA) of the agrarian agenda will inform the insurance company about the incident by email within seven business days.

After that, said insurer will designate an expert to evaluate the damages caused to the insured crop in 15 days and this will verify them with the presence of an agrarian agent, who will prepare an adjustment certificate. If this report states that there is a catastrophic loss, the insurance company will coordinate with the DRA to register the farmers within the following 30 days.

In order to cancel the compensation, said insurance company must open a bank account and pay the agricultural producer the sum of S/800 for each hectare of the insured crop within 30 days.
