Peruvian coffee: they seek to increase the annual per capita consumption of this grain to 5 kilograms by 2030

ItPeruvians currently consume around 1.4 kilograms of coffee on average per year and by 2030, the aim is for this volume to exceed 5 kg per capita, says Martín Villafuerte, general manager of the National Commission for Development and Life without Drugs (OF LIFE).

According to the official, achieving this objective will be possible by changing the consumption habits of the population and creating a better articulation between coffee growers and the market. “DEVIDA works with more than 8,000 coffee-growing families. We are going to participate in various national and international fairs, but now we want to emphasize domestic consumption, so we are going to make more alliances with small and large coffee shops,” he commented during the subscription of the Promotion and Marketing Alliance between DEVIDA and Cafeteria.pe.

For his part, Orlando Rodríguez, DEVIDA’s specialist in Comprehensive and Sustainable Alternative Development, indicates that the purpose of this goal is to help producers improve their capacities and achieve greater productivity. “We accompany this process of technical assistance and training for families. We are creating spaces where producers and consumers can talk and achieve higher levels of sales,” he says.

Impact on coffee growers

According to Rodríguez, the first impact of the increase in coffee consumption is the substitution and containment of illegal crops in areas with the VRAEM. While a second effect is the improvement of the socioeconomic conditions of small coffee growers as a result of the increase in their income.

Although the farmers of the 237 districts where DEVIDA operates are also dedicated to other crops such as cocoa and fruit trees, their average income reaches around S/1,200 per month, estimates the specialist in Comprehensive Alternative Development. In this sense, he adds that the increase in per capita coffee consumption could double this income, that is, S / 2,400 each month.
