World competitiveness ranking 2023: Peru lags behind in economic performance and infrastructure

Peru is ranked 55 out of 64 countries in the 2023 World Competitiveness Ranking. In this way, it falls one position in the general ranking, compared to 2022, with 48.1 points. Of the four pillars evaluated, our country regresses several steps related to economic performance and infrastructure.

“The challenges that the ranking reveals in each pillar require long-term strategic planning and effective coordination between the different levels of government and the sectors involved. Only through concrete and sustained actions will we be able to improve Peru’s position for the country’s competitiveness and development,” said Luis del Carpio, director of the Information Transfer Office (OTRI) of Centrum PUCP.

He World Competitiveness Rankingpresented by Centrum PUCP and the Swiss Institute of Management Development (IMD), is a tool that assesses the competitiveness of 64 countries by measuring four pillars: economic performance, government efficiency, business efficiency, and infrastructure.

With respect to economic performance, Peru has lagged behind. He dropped from 40th to 53rd, a drop of 13 positions compared to the previous year. According to the report, the rating is related to the scant advances in international trade and employment.

“These results underscore the importance of continuing to strengthen investment attraction and maintaining adequate price stability. These actions will contribute to improving Peru’s competitive position on the global stage and foster much-needed sustainable and equitable economic growth in the country” , they maintain in the report.

In infrastructure moved to position 60 out of 64 countries, which demonstrates that there are a series of pending tasks in the development and improvement of physical infrastructure, such as roads, transport, energy and telecommunications. In government efficiency, Peru improved its position in 2022 and rose from position 52 to 50; and in commercial efficiency we are located in the 53rd place.

Chile continues to lead the ranking in 44th place; behind is Peru in position 55; It is followed by Mexico, which also fell one position, and is now ranked 56. Colombia is ranked 58, despite having registered improvements in the score. Finally, Brazil, Argentina and Venezuela.

The second position is taken by Ireland (99.7) with a strong rise from seventh place due to its solid achievements in economic performance. Switzerland (99.1) remains first in government efficiency and infrastructure; however, for this 2023 it fell to third place.
