Last Saturday June 17, APM Terminals Callao (APMTC)concessionaire of the Callao North Multipurpose Terminal (TNM), achieved a significant milestone by exceeding the mobilization of 1 million TEU in a single year of concession since the beginning of its work in the country in 2011.
A TEU is a shipping unit of measurement that is equal to 20 feet long by 8 feet wide and 8 and a half feet high (38.51 cubic meters) of space in a container. A single container can have the capacity to carry 1 or 2 TEU.
“This achievement highlights the continuous optimization of operations and the firm commitment of APMTC and its shareholders to continue investing and boosting Peruvian foreign trade,” the company highlighted.
APM Terminals explained that the figure is due, in part, to the global increase in the movement of containers compared to general cargo, a trend that was obstructed due to the pandemic.
In this sense, the volume of containers that have entered the port during the current concession year has exceeded 1 million TEUs, compared to the last cycle July 2021 – June 2022, which was 900,649. With this, a growth of 11% is evidenced.
Lars Vang Christensen, General Manager of APM Terminals Callao, said that this milestone has been possible thanks to the confidence in the capacities and performance of the terminal on the part of shipping clients, which has translated into a significant increase in transshipment container traffic. in the last year and a positioning of APM Terminals Callao as hub international in the region.
“This achievement has also been possible due to the firm commitment of our shareholders to continue investing to modernize the terminal and in its long-term partnership with Peru,” said the executive.
APM Terminals: new cranes in Callao
APM Terminals maintains that another factor to highlight in this record was the arrival of the new electric cranes: 1 STS Super post Panamax crane and 3 eRTG cranes.
“This investment of US$ 30 million, in addition to the contractual obligations of the organization with the terminal, makes it possible to improve the container loading and unloading processes, reducing the attention time of the ships,” said the concessionaire.
Thanks to these equipments, a productivity of 118 containers per hour, that is, an increase of 44% versus the average productivity of last year. This has resulted in a notable increase in the movement of transshipment containers, from 600 to 2,000 units per week.
In addition, the arrival of this equipment and its effective use has enabled the TNM to be used as a connection center to other ports, enhancing the positioning of the First Port as a hub for the port sector in South America.
APM Terminals: more than a decade in Callao
In May 2011, APM Terminals Callao signed a 30-year concession contract with the Peruvian State to be the operator of the Multipurpose North Terminal of the Port of Callao.
In November 2022, it signed an Addendum to the Concession Contract, committing to an investment of more than US$1.2 billion. To date, he has already invested more than US$500 million.
APM Terminals Callao’s multipurpose northern terminal plays a central role in Peru’s economic growth: it is essential for the well-being and economic, technological and social prosperity of the country, including the provision of direct and indirect employment.
For its part, APM Terminals boasts 74 terminals in a global network operated exclusively by the company or in conjunction with a partner. This is equivalent to handling around 250 ship calls per day and 40 million TEUs per year.
