Father’s Day: demand for imported polo shirts, shirts, ties and watches increased this campaign

Peruvian imports of polo shirts, shirts, ties and watches —the most gifted products in the Father’s day— have experienced significant growth between January and May of this year compared to the same period in 2022, according to the Institute for Foreign Trade Research and Development of the Lima Chamber of Commerce (Idexcam).

Carlos Posada, executive director of Idexcam, explained that both the polo shirts and knitted shirts made of cotton or acrylic fibers are in great demand due to the high temperatures during the winter season. In this sense, there was a 9.6% increase in the acquisition of these imported garments, with a total of 219,231 units valued at US$997,230. China was the main supplier with 164,681 products, followed by Bangladesh and Vietnam.

In the case of casual shirts made of cotton or acrylic fibers, 1,351 units were imported for a value of US$23,942, which represents increases of 8.9% and 18.4%, respectively. China also led as a supplier.

Regarding ties, 601,871 units were brought to Peru for a value of US$633,527, with increases of 61% and 51% in quantity and value, respectively. For these, China was the main supplier, followed by Italy.

In the case of sneakers, although the amount imported decreased by 16%, the value increased by 5%. Indonesia was the main supplier, followed by Vietnam and China.

Regarding wristwatches, 1,114,570 units were imported for US$6 million, with an increase of 73.9%. For this item, China was the main supplier with 1,096,565 watches (+75.1%) for US$2 million (66.6%); followed by Thailand, 11,900 watches (+33%) for US$534,412 (+34.1%); and Switzerland, 668 watches (+22.3%) for US$3 million (-1%).

On the other hand, wristwatches for hands, of which 1,114,570 units (+73.9%) were imported for US$6 million (+17.7%). Another sales option is smartwatches or smart watches, of which 555,614 units (+126.5%) were imported for US$8 million (-33.4%). China was the main supplier of this product with 543,205 smartwatches (+134.7%) for US$6 million (-31.5%); followed by Vietnam with 12,222 smartwatches (-8.4%) for US$2 million (-38.8%).

Posada mentioned that these products are timeless and have improved technology. “Smartwatches are gaining ground in consumer preferences due to their additional functions, such as receiving and viewing messages without having to take out the cell phone, as well as other applications such as the monitoring of health and physical activity indicators”, he highlighted.
