The Agency for the Promotion of Private Investment (Proinversión) will award 28 projects for electrical transmission lines and substations for an amount close to US$ 2,200 million in the period 2023-2024, strengthening the National Interconnected Electrical System (SEIN).
So far this year, the entity has already awarded two electrical projects: the 220 kV Ica – Poroma link, expansions and associated substations, and the ITC 220 kV Cáclic – Jaén Norte link, expansions and associated substations, with a total investment cost of US$73. million, which will make it possible to meet the continuous increase in demand for electricity in the departments of Ica, Amazonas and Cajamarca with efficiency and quality.
The next project to be awarded, in July, will be the Piura Nueva – Frontera Substation 500 kV Transmission Line, an estimated investment of US$220 million that will provide energy supply security for Peru and Ecuador, increasing reliability and capacity electricity transmission. The process already has four bidders “with great experience in the development of electrical projects in the Latin American region.”
For the third quarter of 2023, the entity plans to award two groups of projects that include seven electrical projects in total. In the first group are the projects: Huánuco-Tocache-Celendín-Trujillo 500 kV Link and Celendín-Piura 500 kV Link, which comprise 500 kV lines whose lengths add up to approximately 1,044 km and require an estimated total investment amount of US$830 million.
The second group is made up of five projects for an estimated investment of US$180 million, made up of the Belaunde Terry 220 kV Link – North Tarapoto; 500 kV San José – Yarabamba link; ITC 220 kV link Piura Nueva – Colán; ITC SE Lambayeque Norte 220 kV with sectioning; and Piura Este Substation. These projects will make it possible to meet the demand for energy in the south, north and northeast of the country.
“Thus, in 2023, Proinversión will award 10 projects for approximately US$1.3 billion, benefiting more than 10 million Peruvians,” the agency said.
Proinversión: electric transmission in 2024
By 2024, Proinversión has a portfolio of 18 projects for electrical transmission lines and substations, whose tenders are grouped into four processes, for a total amount close to US$900 million. These are the projects that the Ministry of Energy and Mines (Minem) commissioned PROINVERSIÓN in February of this year within the framework of the 2023-2032 Transmission Plan.
- New Poroma Hub Substation (First Stage) and 500 kV Poroma Hub – Collector Link, extensions and associated substations.
- New San José “Hub” Substation – First Stage and 220 kV San José “Hub” Link – Distribution (Arequipa), expansions and associated substations (ITC Project).
- New SE Marcona II and Link 138 kV Marcona II – San Isidro (Bella Unión) – Pampa (Chala), expansions and associated substations (ITC Project)
- 500 kV Chilca CTM-Carabayllo link, Transformation Expansion and Air Core Reactor in SE Chilca CTM.
- 220 kV Aguaytía – Pucallpa link, substations, lines and associated extensions.
- Reconfiguration of the 220 kV Chavarría – Santa Rosa – Carapongo link, lines, extensions and associated substations.
- 220 kV Planicie – Industrial link, expansion to 3rd circuit.
- 138 kV Abancay Nueva – Andahuaylas link, extensions and associated substations.
- New 220 kV Muyurina Substation, New Ayacucho Substation, 220 kV Muyurina-Ayacucho TL, extensions and associated Substations.
- New 220 kV Palca Substation, 220 kV Palca-La Pascana TL, extensions and associated Substations (Arequipa).
- 138 kV San Román – Yocara – Maravilla link (Juliaca), extensions and associated substations.
The execution and start-up of the projects that will be awarded this year and next will increase the reliability and capacity of the national electrical system, which today has approximately 30,000 kilometers of transmission line.
Of these lines, more than 16,000 kilometers are high-voltage networks (highlighting 3,500 kilometers of 500 kV lines) necessary to minimize electrical energy losses and bring low-cost energy to areas with less availability of cheap energy in the country.
