INEI reports that close to 2 million people from Lima work longer hours, but are poorly paid

According to a report from the National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI), close to 2 million workers in Lima work 35 hours or more a week, but receive less than the reference minimum income established at S/1,217 by the same entity. . INEI: What is the employment situation in Metropolitan Lima?

According to the technical report “Labor Market Situation in Metropolitan Lima”, between March and May 2023, the employed population with a job in Metropolitan Lima amounted to 5 million 161,700. In other words, this represents an increase of 1.0% in relation to the same period as last year and 6.0% more than in 2019.

In addition, the INEI detailed that the number of people with adequate employment decreased by 5.6% compared to the result of the same quarter in the time before the COVID-19 pandemic (173,000 people).

In the case of the underemployed population by income, that is, those who work 35 hours or more a week, but receive a salary lower than the reference minimum estimated by the INEI, 1 million 799,900 people were registered, which represents 59, 6% more than in 2019.

Regarding people who work less than a normal day, there is 31.2% less than in the period before the coronavirus, equivalent to 434,600 citizens.

INEI: What is the situation of the employed population by segments?

This same report from the National Institute of Statistics and Informatics indicates that of the total employed population in Lima, 54.2% are men and 45.8% are women. In the case of women’s work, it grew by 1.9% and men’s by 0.2%, when comparing them with the period between March and May of last year.

Regarding people aged 45 and over, employment increased by 7.6%, followed by the population between 25 and 44 years of age, which is at 0.5%. In addition, it should be mentioned that employed young people under 25 years of age decreased to 11.3%.

It is worth mentioning that the Unemployment rate of Metropolitan Lima was 6.8%being 0.4% lower than those registered between March and May of last year.
