INEI: almost 2 million people from Lima work longer hours but are poorly paid

During the March, April and May quarter, the total number of workers in Metropolitan Lima amounted to 5 million 161,700 people, 6.0% more than in the same period in 2019.

However, breaking down the figures of the National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI), there are 2 million 947,300 citizens adequately employed — that is, alien to precariousness -. Here a contraction of 5.6% is observed compared to the pre-pandemic year (-173,000 people).

On the other side of the coin, there was a 26.7% rise in the underemployed population (+467,300 people): from 1,747,200 in May 2019 to 2,214,500 today.

In income underemployment — those who work 35 hours or more a week but receive less than the reference minimum, set at S/1,217 by INEI as of March — 1,779,900 people were registered, 59.6% more than in 2019 (+664,000 people).

Finally, in underemployment due to insufficient hours — they work less than a normal day — there are 434,600 citizens, 31.2 fewer than in the period before the coronavirus.
