The Ministry of Production (Produce) not only shortened the exploratory fishing two days ahead of schedule, but decided not to start the first industrial anchovy extraction season in 2023 due to the high incidence of juveniles, which reaches 86.3%.
“An important issue for the ministry is the preservation of the fishing resource. If we went out at this moment (…), what we would do is prey on the resource and clearly affect the evolution of this fishery in the following years. That is why we believe that the most responsible thing is not to start the season”, announced yesterday the head of Produce, Raul Perez-Reyes.
The minister specified that this decision will have an impact of at least 30% on the export of flour, and did not rule out the possibility of canceling the second anchovy fishing season, which usually begins in November.
Preliminary results
In said presentation, the president of the Institute of the Sea of Peru (Imarpe), Jorge Paz Acosta, presented the preliminary results of exploratory fishing. It was found that the anchovy has reached a depth of 190 meters in search of colder waters in order to survive, since today the sea presents temperatures of up to 25 degrees due to El Niño Costero.

In addition, between June 3 and 5, the incidence of juveniles was up to 81%, and the sizes have varied between 7 and 15 cm with a mode of 10 cm, when the minimum allowable catch is 12 cm. There was also an incidence of entanglement, which is when the anchovy gets caught in the net. 99% were of this species and the rest of other resources, such as bonito, skipjack and mackerel.
“The information on the current situation of the anchovy, from the north-central stock, in the Peruvian sea allows us to conclude that The biological conditions for the development of extractive activities do not exist”Paz highlighted.
Along these lines, the head of Produce reported that in the next two or three weeks they will see the evolution of the Kelvin wave and the pacific cycloneand based on this, a fourth oceanographic research departure will be evaluated to inspect the situation of the fishing resource.
