President Volodymyr Zelensky assured that Kyiv would file a lawsuit with the International Criminal Court in The Hague against Moscow due to the destruction of the Kakhovskaya hydroelectric power station. According to Kommersant, the Ukrainian leader announced this at a press conference in Kyiv.

Zelensky called the incident ecocide.

Earlier, the Ukrainian Prosecutor General’s Office, on the fact of the collapse of the hydroelectric power station, instructed to open a case under the article on ecocide and violation of the laws of war.

Zelensky added that the consequences of the emergency will be clear in a week, when the water from the reservoir leaves. Now, according to the president, it is obvious that from 35 to 70 settlements will be flooded, and “big problems” with drinking water are also possible in a number of areas.

As it became known, on the right bank of the Dnieper controlled by Kyiv, 71 buildings were flooded due to the destruction of the dam of the Kakhovskaya hydroelectric power station. This was told by the head of the Kherson regional administration Alexander Prokudin. It is also reported that water flooded three bridges across the branches of the Dnieper and the rivers flowing into it, which makes it difficult to access the village of Odradokamenka.

Recall that part of the Kakhovskaya hydroelectric power station collapsed this morning. Water flooded Novaya Kakhovka, Aleshki, and partly Kherson. As a result, 150 tons of engine oil got into the Dnieper.

The Russian and Ukrainian sides accuse each other of blowing up the hydroelectric power station.

The Prosecutor General’s Office of Russia instructed to open a case on the terrorist attack. According to one version, the dam could collapse due to previous damage.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres called the destruction of the Kakhovka hydroelectric dam “a monumental humanitarian, economic and environmental disaster.” At least 16,000 people have already lost their homes, he said. Guterres added that the UN and partners plan to urgently provide assistance to the residents of the affected areas in the form of drinking water, medicines and “other critical assistance.”
