Pampa del Pongo: iron project foresees investments of more than US$ 2,100 million in Peru

A delegation from Jinzhao Mining Peru, which operates the iron ore project in our country Pampa del Pongocame to the headquarters of the Ministry of Energy and Mines (Minem) to report that this project will be for underground mining and its construction will have three phases with an investment of more than US$2.1 billion.

The meeting between the general manager of the company, Zhang Yuan, and the minister Oscar Vera had a positive balance. It is estimated that, in 20 years of operation, the project located in Caravelí, Arequipa, will contribute to Peru close to US$10,000 million in taxes, including the special tax on mining, the special tax on mining, mining canon, tax on income and dividend tax.

For his part, Minister Vera said that Pampa de Pongo will generate more work for Peruvians since it is a long-term project, and complies with the standards established by Minem, so its development is of great importance for the Peru.

The head of Minem affirmed that the growth indicators in mining have been recovering after the reduction of the conflict, and additionally, new projects are underway such as Zafranal in Arequipa, with US$2,000 million in investments, as well as the Toromocho Expansion in Junín, which will contribute to the growth of the country.

He added that the Yanacocha Sulfuro project in Cajamarca is also underway, which will help generate more employment, investment, transfers to municipalities and regions, allowing the prospects of the sector to be addressed with optimism.

The minister reported that he was in Argentina a few weeks ago, participating in the Arminera 2023 fair, the most important in that country, where he was able to meet with representatives of the European Union as well as authorities from the mining and energy sector of Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, among others.

“We were able to present the mining potential we have. It was a successful experience, we had bilateral meetings with the representatives of the European Economic Community, which expressed its interest in investing in Peru and is one more reason to continue promoting the country’s image,” he claimed.
