This year the economy will grow just 2.6%, according to the Central Reserve Bank of Peru (BCRP), due to internal factors such as natural disasters and social conflicts.
Julio Velarde, president of the BCRP, announced this Friday that there is a downward bias in the GDP estimate “because of everything that has happened so far.”
“We expected growth of more than 3% for the first quarter, but it ended up being -0.4: a drop. Partly it was the protests that seriously affected growth in January and February and then weather factors in March; but there were more protests“, he pointed out in inPERU.
The banker described the Peruvian GDP rate for this year as mediocre but it still keeps us in a better position compared to other Latin American countries, although it is not cause for celebration considering the state of the region, which appears to be “almost irrelevant”.
“It is a mediocre growth, but it is in the entire region. We are not so bad in front of Latin America, it’s just that Latin America is a disaster. It is a disaster, ”she concluded.
