The use of fiber optics to access fixed internet service continues to grow. At the end of the first quarter of 2023, Peru registered 1 million 382,579 fiber optic connections to the home (FTTH for its acronym in English), which represented an advance of 79.61% compared to the same period of 2022reported the Supervisory Agency for Private Investment in Telecommunications (Osiptel).
In the third month of the year, fiber optic connections represented 42% of the total connections to the fixed Internet access service in the national territory and thus became the main engine for the growth of this market.
According to the information processed by Osiptel’s Directorate of Regulatory Policies and Competition (DPRC), the number of fixed fiber optic Internet connections has grown steadily in the last five years and accumulated an average annual growth rate of 121%.
Compared to 2022, the increase in the number of connections registered in Lima and Callao stands out (+92.77%), with a total of 806,153 in March 2023. Regarding the number of connections in other departments, growth was evidenced 63.97%, going from 351,546 connections to 576,426 in March of this year.
Win and Wow advance their share in the fiber optic market
Regarding market share, telephone is the operating company that registers the greatest reduction in the last 12 months (-9.36%), while the group made up of Wi-net and Optical Technologies, wow and the companies Fiberlux, Fiberlux Tech and Fiberline increased their participation by 1.26%, 9.16% and 0.71%, respectively.
Thus, in Peru, Telefónica ranks first with 36.75%, followed by Wi-net and Optical Technologies (24.07%), Wow (13.98%)Claro (12.84%), the group made up of Fiberlux, Fiberlux Tech and Fiberline (2.91%) and other companies (9.46%).
