The award was presented on May 10 at an event in Guayaquil attended by the Undersecretary for Environmental Quality, directors of Valdez and Nobis Holding de Inversiones, public and private entities, and representatives of the environmental and agricultural sectors.

Through the Undersecretariat for Environmental Quality, with the support of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), Valdez was able to implement the best environmental practices and the best techniques available in its production systems, which reduced the generation and release of unintentional persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in the sugarcane harvest. .

These pollutants are mainly produced by the burning of sugar cane during harvesting. Having no-burn ecosystems, it directly benefits the 2,000 employees of the Valdez plant, as well as the cities of Milagro and Yaguachi, which are located in the company’s area of ​​influence.

The project, led by the Chemicals Management Program (PNGQ), belonging to Maate, and the Valdez sugar factory have been working since 2019 to properly manage POP NI in the company’s production system. The program included, among other things, the taking of soil and water samples for their later analysis in international laboratories.

Another of the activities carried out by the program was the creation A guide to the best ecological practices and the best techniques, with the implementation of which it is possible to reduce the production of 7,826 grams of toxic dioxin and furan equivalents, in hectares of green harvest, of which 6,107.49 belong to Valdez, and 14,233.96 to sugar cane growers who supply sugar cane to the mill; likewise, there was a reduction of 134,319.32 tons of carbon dioxide equivalent between 2020 and 2021 due to green harvesting.

This project is part of the initiatives implemented by Azucarera Valdez and Nobis Holding de Inversiones to help preserve the environment and promote their circular economy.
