Egg price drops to less than S/11 in markets

The price of egg in various markets in Metropolitan Lima it is above S/10 (see infographic). Like the price of chicken, it presented an increase in its costs since April and now a slight reduction can be observed.

In the Aurora market, in Cercado de Lima, the egg reported a slight decrease from S/10.80 to S/10.50 per kilo, while in the Limoncillo market, in Rímac, it has remained constant at S/10 .50, according to a team from La República. Meanwhile, in the Central Market it went from S/11 to S/10.50.

Likewise, in the wholesale markets, the value amounts to S/9.49, which means a reduction of 0.4% in relation to the price at the beginning of the week (S/9.45).

According to Christian Garay, director of Statistics, Monitoring and Evaluation of Policies of the midagri, the expectation is that the supply and prices will normalize by August. “Between four and six months the population of laying hens that were affected by bird flu would be recovering,” said the official.

In addition, he added that, by April, the poultry industry had managed to import more than 16 million fertile eggs from Brazil. However, Raúl Salas, president of the Association of Poultry Farmers of the South (Avisur) estimated that cost stability could only be seen in the next 8 months thanks to the entry of young hens. “The egg is going to be between 50 and 20 cents more in the following months. No matter how much (the price) of soybeans and corn has fallen, our costs remain high, ”he said.

BCRP. The president of the Central Reserve Bank of Peru (BCRP), Julio Velarde, explained that the bird flu had affected the number of breeding hens. Likewise, by June, the cost of the egg will stabilize.

Affectation. The avian flu and the drop in input imports (soybeans and wheat) would have been reversed, according to Midagri.
