Government rules out unilateral mine closure

Continuing with the dialogue between the Executive Power and the mining sector, the Vice Minister of Mines, Jorge Chavez, and representatives of the Presidency of the Council of Ministers (PCM) met yesterday with the companies Compañía Minera Ares (Hochschild Mining Group), Sami and Apumayo to discuss the situation of the Pallancata, Inmaculada, Breapampa and Apumayo mining operations.

In this meeting, the Executive He reiterated to the businessmen that strict respect for the legal framework for mining operations and investments is guaranteed.

Likewise, mining entrepreneurs and government representatives agreed that efforts should be made to promote more sustainable mining, respectful of the environment and with greater social commitment.

There is no unilateral closure

To clarify the issue, the head of the PCM, Mirtha Vásquez, ruled out the closure and request for the unilateral withdrawal of the operations of the mining units that meet the requirements and conditions established in the national and sectorial legislation, and that have the permits current.

In this regard, he indicated that mining companies are empowered to request extensions, extensions and modifications to their permits to explore and exploit in strict adherence to what the regulations establish.

However, this request must be evaluated by the competent authorities, which must comply with the processes of citizen participation and transparency.

He added that the closure plans (progressive, final and post-closure) and their modifications, presented by the companies and approved by the competent authorities, are managed and controlled by the State, as it is intended that the cessation of activities be carried out within a framework sustainable environment.

“The Government respects the rule of law, there is no violation of legal security or unilateral closures, but the State assumes the function of supervising the processes of closure of mines and environmental control according to legal frameworks, ”said Vásquez.

This statement was welcomed by the National Society of Mining, Oil and Energy (SNMPE), which took the opportunity to ratify its willingness to work on the sustainability and competitiveness of the mining industry.

Meanwhile, the Central Fighting Committee of Ayacucho Sur against environmental pollution stated that if the act signed in Coracora is not complied with, the indefinite strike in the mining units will be activated again.

In response to this, Vásquez said that the Executive’s statement does not ignore the deal with the community members. “We will work on those agreements: follow mine closure plans, how each company is doing. Work on the environmental issue. Generate a climate of peace. The population wants to see who produced the acts of violence, but they cannot report just because they report. There can be no unnecessary criminalization ”, he emphasized.
