Midagri: chicken price remains at S/11 in markets

This represents a slight decrease of 3.3% in relation to Friday, May 19, where it was at S/11.93. Nevertheless, it has not yet reached the levels of January, when it traded at S/9.78.

In wholesale markets, the cost of poultry meat remained between S/7.35 and S/7.55 per kg. On the other hand, the egg was marketed, wholesale, at S/9.45 and S/ 9.50 per kilo. At the retail level, this product has not yet dropped below S/11. According to official figures, at the beginning of this week approximately 1,763 tons of this bird have been sold.

By the end of April, the chicken rose to around S/14, while inflation, in the fourth month of the year, reached 7.97%, according to the National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI).

Christian Garay, director of Statistics, Monitoring and Evaluation of Midagri Policies, pointed out that in recent weeks the price of the bird has maintained a downward trend due to the fact that the main factors such as the impact caused by avian flu and the drop in imports of inputs have been reversed.

“Soy, one of the essential foods for chicken along with corn, has presented an increase in income by 20% according to Sunat figures,” he said. Thus, by June it is expected that the costs of this food that is part of the basic basket will be reduced.

Along these lines, the president of the Central Reserve Bank of Peru (BCRP), Julio Velarde, previously, foresaw that the bird flu had affected many countries in the region and the number of breeding hens. However, for this month and for June, the values ​​should drop. “The chicken will probably normalize the price in May (…) the egg will take a little longer, maybe in June,” he said.

More than 8,000 tons of food entered

For the beginning of this week, around 8,392 tons of vegetables and fruits entered the main wholesale markets of the Capital, according to Midagri.

For its part, potatoes registered the highest income by 18.3% (832 tons more) compared to the last four Mondays in the Great Wholesale Market of Lima (GMML).
