Chicken price in Lima remains above S/11 in markets

The price of chicken remains at S/11.39 per kilogram this Friday, May 19, in the retail markets of Metropolitan Lima, according to the Ministry of Agrarian Development and Irrigation (Midagri). This represents a decrease of 0.7% in relation to the last Wednesday, May 17. However, it has not yet reached the levels of January, when it was listed at S/9.78. By the end of this week, approximately 1,893 tons of this bird have been sold.

Since February, the price of the bird has increased and, in March, it even reached S/13. According to Christian Barrantes, Vice Minister of Development of Family Farming and Agrarian Infrastructure and Irrigation, it is expected that by June chicken prices will be more affordable and will decrease even more due to the avian flu and the lack of inputs (corn and soy) “have already been mitigated,” he told RPP.

Along these lines, he also indicated that, currently, there is a supply of chickens in the market. “In these times, like Mother’s Day, there is a greater demand, which causes prices to increase a bit. But it is important to ensure that there is a sufficient supply of chicken,” he stated.
