The dollar exchange rate closed higher for the second consecutive day this Tuesday, May 16, 2023 and was placed at S/3.6990. This meant an advance of 0.85% compared to S/3.6680 at the close of Monday, according to the Central Reserve Bank of Peru (BCRP).

At 1:50 pm, the green ticket in the banking market was trading at S/3,670 for the purchase and S/3,700 for the sale. While the referential exchange rate in the banking market was located at S/3.6630 for the purchase and S/3.7290 for the sale at the Banco de Crédito del Perú (BCRP).

During the day, the demand came from offshores, taking the dollar to a maximum level of S/3.6950 and US$464 million were traded in the market at an average price of S/3.6830, said Fabiola Gutierrez, Foreign Exchange Trader. of Rent4 SAT. She added that the BCRP intervened by placing an exchange swap sale for S / 400 million at an average rate of 5.43%. Likewise, there were maturities of exchange swap sales for S/ 200 million.

Currencies in Latin America have been depreciating and the dollar is regaining ground as a safe haven asset in the face of continued uncertainty about whether the debt ceiling will be raised to prevent US government obligations from being defaulted. Likewise, the Fed Chairman of Atlanta declared that it does not anticipate a reduction in interest rates for this year and hopes that the measures taken so far will have an effect on the economy.

The DXY was trading at 102.56 at the close of the market.
