The latest report from the National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI)which contains the results of the index of poverty at the end of 2022, it considers the Cajamarca region to be the poorest in the country, which affects more than 40% of its population, made up of more than 1.3 million inhabitants. Through a comparison, the entity highlights that Ica has the best figures, since it registers less than 10% of poverty due to factors that mark its economic growth and that are reflected in their productive activities.
The head of INEI, Dante Carhuavilca, stated that the monetary poverty in the country increased from 25.9% to 27.5% in the evaluation interval of 2021 to 2022. This study also involved the classification of the regions into five groups in order to obtain targeted figures.
Thus we have that Cajamarca, Huánuco, Puno, Ayacucho and Pasco have more than 40% poverty; Loreto, Huancavelica, Callao and Piura is between 30% and 40%. Likewise, those with records between 20% and 30% are La Libertad, Amazonas, Metropolitan Lima, San Martín, Tumbes, Apurímac, Tacna, Ucayali and Cusco.
It was also identified that with 10% to 20% are Lambayeque, Arequipa, Madre de Dios and Moquegua. However, the head of the INEI He emphasized that the only region that has less than 10% poverty is Ica.
Dante Carhuavilca remarked that, of the five regions with more than 40% deprivation, Cajamarca is the most affected. “Records indicate that Cajamarca has the highest level of poverty in 2022,” the official told RPP.
Lines followed, he insisted on the economic results in Ica, which are the best according to the studies. “The Poverty is a heterogeneous phenomenon that does not affect the regions in a similar way. (…) Ica has a peculiar aspect. There is a very interesting development in the agro-industrial, agricultural, agro-exporter. In addition, it has two very strong mining areas. One linked to Marcona, which produces iron and a new copper mine. In such a way that Ica is the one with the least social complications compared to the other regions of the country”, explained Carhuavilca.
