Use mandatory transparent backpacks: it is the new measure that is going to be implemented in schools in South Florida, in the United States, to prevent mass shootings. Nuria Calvo, a Spaniard residing in that state, has received a notice from the educational center where her children go, informing her that, starting next year, they will have to carry a transparent backpack.

With this rule, they want everything that the students bring to the classroom to be visible, in order to detect it in case there is a hidden weapon. Howeverthis measure does not completely reassure parents, who believe that other options might work better. “Let’s see, it occurs to me, well, detectors. Apart from the prohibition of weapons, that is of course,” Nuria Calvo added.

The United States has already had to regret more than a hundred mass shootings so far this year, many of them in various schools in the country. Florida, for example, was the scene of a bloody school shooting in 2018, in which 17 people died. Nikolas Cruz, 19, walked into his high school in the town of Parkland, Florida, armed with a semi-automatic rifle and several magazines with ammunition. Before being arrested, he shot everyone who crossed his path.

Now, with this measure, the authorities intend to put an end to a growing concern in the United States, while continuing to facilitate access to weapons.
