Mining contamination in Ayacucho affects 50,000 agricultural producers

In the midst of the controversy over the compliance with the Mine Closure Plan of four mining units in the south of Ayacucho, leaders of the area came out to express the reasons why they request the withdrawal of the companies.

Willy Contreras, advisor to the Committee to Combat Mining Pollution in Ayacucho, pointed out that with the contamination of the headwaters of the basin in the south of Ayacucho, more than 50,000 agricultural producers are affected.

“We are dealing with an environmental mining conflict that we have been dragging on for more than 10 years. A large number of laboratory results have been delivered on water contamination in the huanca huanca river basins and others (…) In the province of Parinacochas, Paucar de Sara Sara and Lucanas are more than 50,000 agricultural producers affected ”, said the leader in an interview with RPP.

Contreras also indicated that the population is affected by metals found in the blood, in addition to the extinction of animals in rivers and cattle.

He recalled that on January 27, in the previous government of Francisco Sagasti, the community signed an agreement with the former head of the Ministry of Energy and Mines (Minem), Jaime Gálvez, to withdraw mining companies from the headwaters of the basin.

Finally, he urged compliance with the Cora Cora act signed on November 19. “We have no other alternative. Here it is already about life, the peasants, agricultural producers of southern Ayacucho cannot stand this situation anymore ”, he concluded.
