Tax reform as a global and Latin American challenge for economic justice

The tax reform is part of a global discussion in a context of economic crisis. He International Monetary Fundthe Group of 20 (G20), the European Central Bank, and several governments of America, like those of the US, Colombia, Brazil and Chile have been putting on the agenda the need for the most profitable companies and the richest citizens to contribute more. This, so that the States are not underfunded and can fulfill their role of guaranteeing the social rights of all, especially the poorest.

In this context, experts will discuss the recent experience of Colombia, Chile and Peru about tax reform. Pedro Francke, former Minister of Economy and Finance of Peru; Ricardo Martner, former head of tax policies at ECLAC and current member of the Independent Commission for the Reform of International Corporate Taxation (ICRICT); Susana Ruiz, head of Tax Justice at Oxfam International; and César Flores, economist and researcher at the Peru Tax Justice Groupwill participate in this international seminar that will be broadcast via La República TV next Wednesday, May 10 at 10 am

As recalled, in Peru a tax reform proposal presented by the Ministry of Economy and Finance (MEF) was discussed, which included three axes: formalization, fight against tax noncompliance and increase progressivity to reduce inequities. However, in 2021 Congress chose to approve some issues but leave out the core aspects of the reform. He Economy MinisterAlex Contreras, has turned the page and said that this is not the time to talk about it.

Meanwhile, similar proposals are advancing in Colombia (where the reform proposed by Petro has already been approved), Chile and Brazil, where the Congressand even the US, where a tax on billionaires is being discussed, and at the international level the G20 has approved a tax on transnational corporations.

The seminar is organized by the Tax Justice Group, CooperAcción and Oxfam in Peru.
