Julio Javier Demartini Monte, Minister of Development and Social Inclusion (Midis)confirmed that poverty levels have risen in 2022 above those of the previous year and would be above 27%.

“Unfortunately, on issues of (fight against) anemia we have regressed. In poverty, despite the fact that we had made a containment of 30% to 25%, today the evaluations have given us two more points and we are over 27%”, Demartini said this Tuesday, May 2, during a session of the Commission for Social Inclusion and People with Disabilities.

Previously, the figures for 2021 indicated that poverty reached 25.9%, according to the National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI). This represented progress compared to 2020, when there was a peak of 30.1% that affected more than 9.9 million people. Thus, the levels of 2022 would get closer and closer to those of the pandemic.

It should be noted that the Ministry of Economy (MEF) previously indicated that a decline in poverty was not expected for 2022 due to the rise in inflation and the low progress of the national economy.
