The results of the report on the anchovy evaluation process, prepared by the Institute of the Sea of Peru (Imarpe)report that this type of fish is concentrated in the first miles of the coast and the incidence of juveniles is 82%.

The first sample was held from February 19 to March 24 in the northern and central region. While between April 17 and 21, the Eureka LXXIV operation was carried out—which collects information on the environmental conditions and spatial distribution of the anchovy and its sizes— along the Peruvian coast. The presence of the fish was also detected in some areas up to depths of 100 meters and a movement from north to south.

In detail, it is specified that the population structure of the anchovies found is made up of sizes between 3.5 cm and 15.5 cm in length. “In this opportunity, the incidence of juveniles was 82% in number and 58% in weight units; that summer spawning was less intense than expected for this season and the somatic condition of the anchovy was below average.” , can be read in the IMARPE report.

The results were presented to the main guilds of the fishing activity, which agree on the need to continue with an evaluation of the anchovy in order to recommend appropriate measures to guarantee the sustainability of the marine resource.

The institute has indicated that it will continue to monitor ocean-meteorological and biological conditions with a second cruise in May. So far, the conditions generated by El Niño Costero are expected to continue to develop until the winter of 2023.
