Coffee growers warn of risk in exports if the Executive branch does not comply with the requirements of the European Union

The National Coffee Board (JNC) asked the Executive to urgently adapt internal regulations to adapt to the decision of the European Union (EU) to import agricultural products, such as coffee, from non-deforested areas and formal land.

To this end, the president of the JNC, Tomás Córdova, urged a prompt meeting with officials and technicians from the Presidency of the Council of Ministers (PCM), the Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation (Midagri), the Ministry of the Environment (Minam) and Promperú, since the EU requirements will come into effect next year.

In this sense, Córdova indicated that it is urgent to prepare a Coffee Reconversion Plan, associated with zero carbon, otherwise exports of aromatic grain will fall drastically, since more than 50% of shipments are destined for the European continent.

“We are in a very critical situation, since the EU standard not only requires that agricultural products have a guarantee that they do not come from deforested areas, but that they are recognized land, but 80% of the land where coffee is grown does not they have property title”, he revealed in the forum Strategies for Inclusive Financing, Market and Resilience to Climate Change for coffee organizations” organized by the JNC in alliance with TRIAS.

The leader argued that several coffee cooperatives have developed agroforestry experiences on the coffee farms of their members, but the participation of the State is required to massify these experiences and thus be able to comply with the standards of the European market.

The representative of the JNC added that for this reason a public-private alliance is crucial, to seek to agree on guidelines to have a work agenda aimed at the reconversion of coffee farming, adapted to climate change, to continue exporting Peruvian coffee to the European market. .
