The Ministry of Transport and Communications (MTC) expects to have ready before January 2025 the Santa Rosa Bridge which will serve as access to the new control tower and landing strip of the Jorge Chávez airport, according to Alberto Ñecco Tello, vice minister of Transportation. The work that will be carried out under the modality of works for taxes will require an investment of US$348.2 million, and has a Modified Institutional Budget for this year of S/112.43 million.
Currently, it is in the preparation of bases and documents for the Comptroller General of the Republic as part of the stage of previous acts. “We already have the interest of a company, Urbi Propiedades, and with the schedule that we manage in the Work for Tax, we are sure that we will be able to enable access to the airport by January 2025,” Ñecco said at a press conference.
On the other hand, the official also highlighted that among the projects prioritized by his sector is the execution of Line 2 of the Metro. This year it is planned to put into operation section 1A that goes from Santa Anita to the Vía de Evitamiento. At the national level, the access to the Chinchero airport stands out with an investment of S/410 million, the Via Express Santa Rosa (S/915 million), the new “Daniel Alcides Carrión” Central Highway (S/11,959 million). This last initiative, in February the progress of the profile study was at 72.5%. The MTC plans to conclude this stage next month and start the definitive study in June.

Flights from new runway
On the other hand, the MTC reported yesterday that since April 14, the date on which daily operations began at the second runway of the Jorge Chávez International Airport —operated from the new control tower—, more than 32,200 passengers have traveled through 258 flights. “Only eight days ago we began continuous operation in the time slot from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm of the new tower and the second runway of the Jorge Chávez airport. Since that date, there have already been 117 takeoffs, 141 landings and they have transported 132,206 passengers”, explained Vice Minister Ñecco.
The official also indicated that the time slot that is currently managed will be extended progressively in the coming months. The start of operations of the new facilities occurs more than four years after the start of the work (November 2018), which will require around US$2,000 million. According to data from LAP —the concessionaire of Jorge Chávez—, the company would have invested US$316 million in the aforementioned project in 2022 alone. Added to the investments since the beginning of the concession, in 2001, they accumulated a total of US$1,234 million.
In general, according to the Ositran (as of January 2023), accumulated investments in airport infrastructure development in the case of LAP reached US$377 million. It should be noted that this year the MTC plans to achieve a financial execution of US$533 million in the expansion of the country’s main air terminal.
