MTC: more than 32,200 passengers traveled using the second runway of the Jorge Chávez airport

The Ministry of Transportation and Communications (MTC) reported today, Friday the 21st, that since April 14, the date on which daily operations began at the second runway of the Jorge Chávez International Airport —operated from the new control tower— , more than 32,200 passengers have traveled through 258 flights.

“Only eight days ago, we began continuous operation in the time slot from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm of the new tower and the second runway of the Jorge Chávez airport. Since that date, there have already been 117 takeoffs, 141 landings, and they have transported 132,206 passengers; including the landing and takeoff of transatlantic aircraft from airlines such as Air France,” explained Alberto Ñecco, Deputy Minister of Transport at a press conference.

The official also indicated that the time slot that is currently being handled will be extended progressively in the coming months. “We anticipate that it will be the starting point (…) to take a progressive step, to gradually and safely increase operations through the new infrastructure,” he commented. Likewise, he added that this stage of operational transition “is necessary to be able to provide the space for familiarization with the new facilities.”

In this way, they will be prepared to gradually move to the phase of operation of two landing strips simultaneously, which will happen gradually once the new passenger terminal is completed in 2025.

The conference was also attended by authorities from the Supervisory Body for Investment in Public Use Transport Infrastructure (Ositran), the Peruvian Corporation of Airports and Commercial Aviation (Corpac), the concessionaire Lima Airport Partners (LAP), the General Directorate of Aeronautics Civil (DGAC) and the aeronautical unions IATA and AETAI.

Improvements in infrastructure and training

The operational transition of the Jorge Chávez International Airport implies identifying the necessary adjustments and, if applicable, making the corresponding improvements in the new control tower and second runway.

Likewise, as part of this stage, Corpac will send its air traffic controllers to train in Europe for the management of two landing strips simultaneously, in order to guarantee safe and efficient operations, as has been done in other international airports that have two tracks as in Chile, Colombia and Brazil.
