Many people notice that they wake up between 3.00 and 4.00 am. As it turns out, it is controlled by our psyche and natural processes in the body. In order to wake up refreshed, we should sleep 8 hours a day. Although you can wake up several times at night, it is this wake-up call at 3.00 that we remember the most. Why is this happening?

Why do we wake up at 3am? Two stages of sleep

it’s a very important part of our lives. Thanks to sleep, we can regenerate and function properly the next day. When we go to bed in the evening, we dream of uninterrupted sleep and waking up only with the sound of the alarm clock. It happens, however, that at 3.00 am we wake up suddenly and often have a problem to fall asleep again. It is related to the stages of sleep. The first phase is NREM and is characterized by hard sleep. It occurs immediately after falling asleep and lasts about 100 minutes. Then there is a drop in blood pressure and a drop in temperature. This is when the body really rests and regenerates.

The second phase is REM, and this is when you wake up between 3am and 4am. During REM sleep, body temperature rises again and the brain works harder. During this time we dream, but we are more alert. This leads to awakenings, behind which there is increased brain work, as well as our subconscious fears and worries that interfere with regeneration and prevent relaxation. That’s why it’s hard for us to fall back asleep once we wake up.

Is 3.00 the ghost hour? Science makes it clear

At 3.00 am in our body there is a decrease in melatonin, i.e. the hormone responsible for the proper functioning of the biological clock. When melatonin drops and body temperature rises, we instinctively wake up. During NREM sleep, we actually rest, so if we sleep for a few hours and wake up at 3:00 a.m., the body will be in REM sleep and will no longer feel as much need for sleep.

Some people believe that waking up at 3 am is related to the so-called. devil’s hour and paranormal phenomena. There are theories that at this hour the line between the world of the living and the dead is blurred. Nothing more wrong. – Faith is a powerful thing. When we believe in the “devil’s hour”, we give it power – Ben Eno, paranormal expert. However, it is worth trusting science and looking for reasons only in human physiology.
