UNAM: Oscar Ugarteche Galarza is the first Peruvian winner of the 2021 National University Award

The Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) announced that the Peruvian doctor and researcher Oscar Ugarteche Galarza is the winner of the 2021 National University Award, in the area of ​​Research in Administrative Economic Sciences.

It is important to note that this award has never been won by a Peruvian before and is given each year to members with academic trajectory outstanding from UNAM.

Oscar Ugarteche Galarza was born in Lima, Peru. He completed a Bachelor of Finance at Fordam University in New York, USA, and has a master’s degree in Economics from London University, England. He also worked as a professor at the Pontificia Católica del Perú (PUCP) between 1984 and 2004.

The Peruvian researcher has a broad academic career. Currently, he works in the field of financial economics, and is attached to and coordinates the Latin American Economic Observatory (Obela). He entered the UNAM in September 2005 as a titular researcher A and in 2018 he obtained level C, with which he was placed as a definitive researcher. It has 28 published academic books, 92 articles and 58 chapters. In addition, it has more than a thousand citations, of which 504 are referenced to the year 2005.

His greatest contribution has been by questioning the conventional theoretical framework for understanding the international economy and its relationship with economic development, as well as criticizing the export growth model, which is the basis of his work in the last three decades. . This work was internationalized with his doctoral thesis in 2007 and with the subsequent publication of his book International Financial Architecture. A Genealogy of 1850-2008.

Has been visiting professor at eight universities of Latin America and Europe. He has also held the José Gaos Chair three times, two in Madrid and one in Mexico; and, in 2020, he joined the Mexican Academy of Sciences. During his academic career he has taught 40 undergraduate and graduate subjects at UNAM and PUCP.

Likewise, at UNAM he has supervised four undergraduate, six master’s and three doctoral theses, which are in process. He has served on 14 doctoral advisory committees, 12 master’s synods, and four undergraduate juries.
