The Ingka holding, which brings together most of the Ikea stores and represents more than 90% of its total income, plans to open eight new stores and nine points of sale in the United States, an operation that would create 2,000 jobs, according to the company with headquarters in the Netherlands.
“It is the largest investment we have made in a single country,” Tolga Öncü, Ingka’s sales manager, told AFP, for whom there are “infinite possibilities” of business in what represents the group’s second national market, after Germany. .
Currently, the brand has 51 points of sale and 16,600 employees in the United States, where it entered the market in 1985. New stores are expected to open in San Francisco, California, and Arlington, Virginia, within a few months, according to Ikea.
The company will invest throughout the country, but especially in the south.
When will Ikea arrive in Peru?
Ikea has already started its foray into South America in Chile, where it has two stores; then it will reach Colombia and Peru thanks to the agreement it reached with Falabella, which is in charge of developing the franchise in these countries. For now, a probable year for the opening of the first store in Peru is 2026.
In Europe, Ikea continues to grow. In Spain, it has invested 150 million euros (US$164 million) in opening new stores by 2025.
The group was impacted in 2022 by the cessation of activities in Russia after the invasion of Ukraine. This meant the closure of 17 stores, thousands of job cuts and the suspension of several production plants.
