Minister of Transportation, Marcelo Cabrera, announced progress in concessions for the South Guayaquil Viaduct and the Ecuadorian railway

The holder of the portfolio spoke at the international event Ecuador Open for Business, which takes place in Quito.

The concession of the South Viaduct for Guayaquil is underway, and the interest of private initiatives in this project is expected to be known on January 23. That was one of the announcements of the Minister of Transport and Public Works (MTOP), Marcelo Cabrera, within the international event Ecuador Open for Business, which is taking place until today in Quito.

He explained that the viaduct is of the utmost importance, as it boosts foreign trade and generates connectivity between Guayaquil and Puerto Bolívar.

Additionally, he indicated that in the second semester of 2022 the Ecuadorian railway concession will be given. He explained that the company is currently in liquidation and would be reactivated with the private contingent. The railway network was built a century ago and at the moment there are approximately 966 km of railways, however until 2013 only 300 km were operational. The general idea of the Government is that the train can be reactivated, transforming itself into a modern and competitive system, both for freight transport and for tourism.

Other projects that are open to private investment are the Montecristi-La Cadena Project, which is an inter-port corridor between Guayaquil and Manta. This project requires an investment and operating amount of $ 347.5 million, with a 30-year delegation term.

Also in the investment portfolio is the logistics corridor Loja-Catamayo, which acquires greater importance due to its potential in the mining area. An expansion to four lanes is expected with an investment of $ 204.29 million and a concession term of 30 years.

There is also the Port of Esmeraldas with a $ 577 million investment over 30 years and the Cuenca-Molleturo-El Empalme road, which has 119 km that must be rehabilitated and whose concession would last 10 years.

James Scriven, general manager of IDB Invest, highlighted that the projects proposed by Ecuador go in the direction that IDB Invest in turn seeks to support. Therefore, it was made available to investors who require financing in this type of initiative.

Scriven stressed that they are coming out of a difficult year for humanity in the framework of the pandemic. And, in this sense, IDB Invest seeks to carry out its Vision 2025, which seeks, among other issues, a reorientation of international value chains.

Within this objective is to promote Latin America, and in particular Ecuador, as a headquarters for the provision of services and products. In addition, he said, they seek to promote the use of technology, especially for vulnerable sectors. They also seek support for SMEs. (I)
