This Thursday is living the eleventh day of mobilizations in France, to protest the pension reform of Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne. Thousands of people have gathered in the demonstrations in cities such as Baiona, Paris, Rennes or Marseille and some incidents have been recorded in Lyon and Nantes.

The unions called for a massive mobilization yesterday, after the failure of the meeting they held with the Government. They affirm that it is necessary to continue pressing “to achieve the withdrawal of the reform”.

Sophie Binet, new general secretary of the General Confederation of Labor (CGT) who has led one of the marches in Paris, has affirmed that the Government “lives in a parallel reality” and that “he does not understand what is happening in the country”.

The Secretary General of the French Democratic Confederation of Labor (CFDT), Laurent Berger, stressed that “this movement continues to count on the support of the population” and that “the rejection of this reform continues to be just as strong”.

The unions have convened about 250 demonstrations and they estimate that some 800,000 people will be able to participate. The Ministry of the Interior has deployed more than 11,000 police and gendarmes.

Some of the main universities have seen their access blocked, and many colleges have closed their doors. Likewise, groups of workers have also occupied the headquarters and facilities of some companies and multinationals.

In the morning mobilizations there have been several incidents: some damage to street furniture, shop windows and banks, which has led to the response of the Police, for example, in Nantes and Lyon, where they have fired tear gas at the protesters.

Large demonstration in Baiona

In Ipar Euskal Herria the biggest demonstration has been carried out in Baiona. The conveners have encrypted the participation in some 15,000 people, while the Police have counted some 5,000 people. The message from the attendees has been clear: “it is time to be united to continue pressing”.

The effect of the day of protests, however, has been somewhat less than on previous occasions: the train station, for example, has been open and working.

All eyes are now on what the Constitutional Council will decide on April 14.
