After 45 days of protests, the Kichwa community of Edén, in the province of Orellana, concluded the measure by which the access road to the Edén Yuturi field, in Block 12, was blocked, to sue for alleged violations by Petroecuador.

The joint owners stopped the action on Wednesday, April 5, after new agreements with the public company.

Petroecuador declares force majeure at Edén Yuturi oil field due to Kichwa community strike

Thus, Petroecuador reported that it will lift the declaration of force majeure in the Eden Yuturi field, block 12 and in its direct areas of influence. In this way, field work returns to normal.

In a press release, the state oil company announced that during the dialogue process with the community, a technical commission was formed with representatives from the Orellana Governor’s Office, the Ministry of Urban Development and Housing, the Ministry of the Environment, the Secretariat of the Special Territorial District of Amazonia, Petroecuador and the commune of El Edén.

The agreed obligations are focused on two aspects: the financing of a 100% complete study of the housing construction project, for which Petroecuador will lead the technical desk; and speed up the time of the company’s internal procedures in order to meet the established deadlines.

Residents of Edén, a community of 190 families, began a strike on February 21.

The Kichwa community in Éden has been protesting for more than 20 days against alleged violations by Petroecuador

They demanded that Petroecuador default on commitments made in August 2021, which included the execution of projects related to the supply of drinking water, housing construction, the expansion of a health center, the restoration of electric service and economic compensation for environmental obligations.

The situation meant that at one point Petroecuador had to rely on the armed forces and helicopters to pick up the workers.

About 90,000 barrels of oil are processed daily at the Edén Yuturi field. Crude oil from block 43-ITT and block 31 is also received there. (I)
