Re-commerce is the online sale of used or second-hand products, which today contributes to reducing hyperconsumption, according to Yurico Huayana, country manager of the platform digital commerce VTEX Peru. This is a trend that is becoming increasingly present in our country, so much so that of the total number of online buyers, 20% buy used items and it is expected that this 2023 will reach 25%.
“The sale of second-hand products has already been present in us, but on a small scale and in the sale of cars, for example. But today the exchange of used products such as clothing, accessories, beauty products, household appliances, and handbags is increasing. Being products of a lower ticket, this makes this trend more visible”, explains Huayana.
This preference, which is more present in European countries and the United States, has grown very strongly in 2022, especially in Latin America, Due to the fact that some large brands such as H&M, Zara and Levis are opening a new business unit to be able to buy and sell second-hand products, although it has not yet arrived in our country, in the opinion of the executive, there is still a lot of space for companies and platforms enter the Peruvian market to facilitate the meeting between sellers and customers.
In the case of Peru, The purchase of the fashion and baby categories stands out with an average ticket of S/120 and up to S/250, respectively. In the case of cars, demand has grown by 25% in 2022.
While they are the youths from 18 to 25 years old who buy second-use products the most, since they are discovering new ways to contribute to sustainability, to buy with purpose and this is related to their own ideals.
On the other side of the screen, those who sell do so because they consider it more profitable than selling new products, there, for example, are entrepreneurs who offer their products through channels such as Facebook Marketplace, Instagram, Mercado Libre, among others.
For the specialist, the purchase of this type of product reduces hyper-consumerism and contributes to a more sustainable economy.
“What it is generating is accelerating the purchase of products for a lower average ticket, which contributes to improving the quality of the ecosystem. Being aware of how we support consumption and the reduction of products that harm the environment are being very strong motives among buyers”, he comments.
