Sales of organic food would mobilize US $ 294,000 million this year worldwide

The world exceeded 8,000 million inhabitants in 2022, so a continuous increase in food imports is expected in the coming years. This trade in 2021 grew 14.6% and 7% in 2022, mainly due to the sale of fruits and vegetables, cereals and preparations, meat, fish, crustaceans and others, indicates Edgar Vasquez Veladirector of HUNDRED-ADEX.

Thus, last year, Peru was the 13th supplier to the European Union and represented 2.3% of food imports from this territory with US$242,000 million. It was also ranked 28th in China ($138bn) and 15th in the US ($209bn), with shares of 0.7 and 1.1%, respectively.

In Vásquez’s opinion, the progress of Peruvian products in the foreign market will depend on “appropriate policies, stability, clear rules of the game and international promotion.”

Likewise, the ADEX economist stressed that the new trends in food consumption in the world will also favor national agro-exports; For example, the consumption of organic food, globally, could be around US$ 294,000 million; vegetables, US$160,000 million and those with natural flavors (avoiding artificial colors and flavors), $18 billion.

In this sense, he stressed that, worldwide, the hectares of organic crops are increasing. By continents, Asia, Africa, Europe and Latin America stand out. In the region, Peru is one of the main ones along with Brazil and Mexico, with half a million certified organic hectares and more than 110,000 organic farmers.

“Last year, Peru was the 1st global exporter of blueberries, grapes, quinoa and fresh asparagus; the 2nd of squid, avocados, Amazon nuts, canned asparagus and canned artichokes; and the 3rd of fan shells, whole capsicum, kion, canned hearts of palm, frozen mango and wilkings mandarins”, explained Vásquez Vela.

Expoalimentaria will take place in September

The 15th ADEX Expoalimentaria (EA23) will be held from September 27 to 29 at the Jockey Club Exhibition Center. More than 600 exhibitors, 1,000 international buyers from the five continents, more than 25,000 national visitors and 2,000 business appointments are expected to participate.

In this regard, the Director of Export Promotion of PromPerú, Ricardo Limo Del Castillo, highlighted the joint work between the public and private sectors in recent years, allowing Peru to position itself as a strategic partner worldwide in the supply of food, keeping us like a big pantry.

“We hope that in 2023 we can overcome the barrier of US$10.5 billion in agricultural exports, seeking new markets and products and improving technology. The EA23 is one of the most important platforms to achieve this,” he commented.
