He Ministry of Agrarian Development and Irrigation (Midagri) reported that, so far, the effects of the intense rains and mudslides on the agriculture sector are comparable to those registered during the El Niño phenomenon of 2017.
Through a statement, this ministry indicated that these damages represent 1.2% of the total national agricultural area in production. Thus, the impacts caused by climatic phenomena occurred in 360 districts throughout 22 departments of the national territory.
The records provided by Indeci and the National Emergency Operations Center (COEN) reveal 16,582 hectares of crops lost and 33,954 hectares of crops affected nationwide.
“If we take as a base the four and a half million hectares of crops in production at the national level, the damages resulting from the recent floods in agriculture represent 1.2% of all the agricultural area in production, figures similar to the incidence registered in El Niño costero of 2017”, stressed the director of the General Directorate of Statistics, Monitoring and Evaluation of Policies, Christian Garay.
Garay remarked that, despite the initial interruption of the communication routes due to the intense rains and landslides, more than 90% of the regional and local markets remained supplied with basic necessities to meet the demand of merchants and housewives. From home.
In addition, he pointed out that the impacts on agricultural activity have been marginal, but crops can be recovered with the actions carried out by the Government, through Midagri and regional and local governments, with the provision of services, inputs and rehabilitation irrigation infrastructure to reactivate productive activities in areas impacted by climatic events.
